Notes:

1. Bill Bulpitt came to America in 1929 from England. His occupation was a
"professional gardener" and there was no shortage of work for him in the
areas around New York City. He already had several cousins, aunts and
uncles living in the New York area. He worked on some of the very large
private estates (similar to the country manors found in England) during the
1930's. His sister Evelyn also immigrated to the U.S. but I am not sure of
the year.
2. For better or for worse, my father had become an American citizen in
1939. He was subsequently drafted into the U.S. Army sometime in 1942, at
the tender age of 35 (imagine going through boot camp with the 18 year
olds!). He was inducted into the U.S. Army Air Force sometime in late 1942
and sent to basic training at various places including Sioux City, Iowa. I
don't have too many other details (remember he died when I was twelve), but
I do know that he was then sent back to England and was stationed at the
Eighth Air Force Base near Preston (in the north not too far from
Liverpool). When he got weekend passes he would often go and visit my
mother's family in Scotland, and I actually have some letters sent to her
discussing these trips.
My father worked as a ground crew member on the B-24 bombers (I do remember
him telling me that) and was principally involved in loading the ordnance
onto the planes. Rather romantically, I imagine him in a scene from
"Memphis Belle" where the bomber wing takes off for a mission to Germany in
the morning and when they return late in the afternoon the ground crews
count the incoming planes to figure the losses. Anyway, I have a beautiful
model of a B-24 in my office and a painting (done by an Atlanta artist whose
father was a B-24 pilot) called "Home to Halesworth" which depicts two USAAF
B-24s returning from a mission to Germany over the Cliffs of Dover.
