    Geelong Advertiser, 6th April, 1951:
"Cr. Lewis Hirst, chairman of directors of the firm of Godfrey Hirst and Co. Pty. Ltd. (Excelsior Woollen Mills) and prominent Geelong citizen, diedat his home in Virginia Street, Newton, at 4pm on Wednesday. Cr. Hirst, who was 70 years of age, had been ill for seven months prior to hisdeath. His body was cremated at a private ceremony at Springvale Crematorium yesterday morning.
Had he lived until next August, Cr. Hirst would have served the record term of 30 years as a member of the Newtown and Chilwell City Council. He waselected to the Council as a representative of the North Ward of the municipality on August 25, 1921, and remained on the Council until his death.Cr.Hirst was elected Mayor of Newtown and Chilwell in 1928 and was returned to office on two subsequent occasions in 1929 and 1930.
It was in 1930 that Cr. Hirst entered the Geelong City Council as a representative of Kardinia Ward, and during his term of office he was elected anAlderman for that Ward. He was keenly interested in parks and gardens and was chairman of the Parks and Gardens Committee from 1933 until hisretirement from the Council in 1938. He was a member of the Finance Committee and of several other committees of the Council.
After his retirement from the Council in 1938, Cr. Hirst again felt a desire to return to municipal affairs in the City and stood for the VillamantaWard at an extraordinary election in 1940. However, he was narrowly defeated for the position by Cr. F. E. Richardson.
Throughout the whole of his life Cr. Hirst took a keen interest in rowing. He succeeded the late Colonel H. Speed as president of the Geelong RowingAssociation and served in this position for many years. For a long period Cr. Hirst acted as judge for rowing events in the Barwon regattas and alsofor the Head of the River contests when they were held at Geelong. Cr. Hirst was for many years a member of the committee controlling the GeelongKing Edward VII Sailors' Rest and was associated with St David's Presbyterian Church as a manager and an elder from the time it was established.
Cr. Hirst came to Geelong from England as a boy in 1885 and received his early education at Chilwell State School. He went on to Geelong Grammar tocomplete his education and later entered the famous woollen mills established by his father, the late Mr Godfrey Hirst, on the banks of the Barwon.By his death, Cr. Hirst has severed the last link between the original family and the present, as his two brothers, Messrs H. and W. Hirst, predeceased him. He saw the firm of Godfrey Hirst survive the early difficulties and setbacks and helped to establish it in the position it holdstoday as one of the leading woollen mills of Australia. Outside his own firm Cr. Hirst had few business interests. However, he was for more than 20years an advisory director on the board of the Fidelity Trust Co. Ltd. Cr. Hirst is survived by his widow and three sons."
