    Notes:

Information recorded by Joyce Ethel Gordon 17 April 1977
Alena Jessie Howard supported herself as a seamstress after her husband's death. Times must have been most difficult for her as she was pregnant at the time of his death and would not have received any income from his service because of the stigma of his trial and subsequent death. She later married Arthur Vernon Begbie who had been sent to replace her husband by the Police Force. It is interesting to note that she was pregnant each time she was married to both John Howard and later to A V Begbie. Times were hard in those days in such cases and she must had a very difficult time of it.
My memories: I remember her as a tall austere lady dressed in black with a hard pained look to her face. I remember a house with a side entrance with pretty tiles and glass front door (leadlight half way) and her room being immediately on your left as you came in. Her bed was a single one and the room small, the bed was straight up from the door. She had risen or was rising from it, she had been ill I think. There was a wardrobe next to the bed along the wall opposite the door and a dressing table under the window, she was dressed in black.
I remember my mother telling me she sewed beautifully by hand an pin ticked and worked clothes beautifully. I think she may have made the dress she wore in fact but can't be sure of that. Her hair was long and pulled back in a bun and her dress was almost to her ankles. Her skin seemed to me, I feel, very fair. I can't remember her touching me or smiling. I also believe she wore gold ear rings through pierced ears. I must have been very young at the time for in telling my mother of this memory she was surprised for she felt I would have been much to young to remember but declared that I had described her room as it was.

    Note: from Joyce Ethel Gordon
There was a sister who lived for many years in South Africa and we cared for her at our home when I was young. She had been married but not sure if husband divorced or dead? Lived for some time with Jessie Begbie?
There is a sister to Alena that for many years lived in South Africa, she never had any children and on her return to Australia we cared for her as she was ill it seems. I can remember she used my mother's room and she was very demanding, I do believe she drank but can't be sure. I remember her talking of the Zulus and their rick-shaws that they pulled people around in and she even had a photo of one all decked out in ceremonial clothes with her in the carriage. I remember how large he seemed, his clothing was very decorative. I believe she might have been divorced but can't be sure. Her name escapes me for the present, she lived with Jessie Begbie for some time and then I think went into a home. I remember she had lovely clothes, jewelery and perfumes and that she seemed to receive money regularly from somewhere, I believe it was South Africa. I must have been six or even older in fact I could have been nearer nine. I can't recall her dying but I do believe we heard of it many years later. I think she was somewhere in Sydney at the time.
(Possibly her half sister who married Greneger)

Bailleul is a large town in France, near the Belgian border, 14.5 kilometres south-west of Ieper and on the main road from St. Omer to Lille. From the Grand Place, take the Ieper road and 400 metres along this road is a sign indicating the direction of the cemetery. Turn right into a small road and follow for approximately 400 metres. The cemetery is on the right and the Communal Cemetery Extension is at the bottom end.
Bailleul was occupied on 14 October 1914 by the 19th Brigade and the 4th Division. It became an important railhead, air depot and hospital centre, with the 2nd, 3rd, 8th, 11th, 53rd, 1st Canadian and 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Stations quartered in it for considerable periods. It was a corps headquarters until July 1917, when it was severely bombed and shelled, and after the Battle of Bailleul (13-15 April 1918), it fell into German hands and was not retaken until 30 August 1918. The earliest Commonwealth burials at Bailleul were made at the east end of the communal cemetery and in April 1915, when the space available had been filled, the extension was opened on the east side of the cemetery. The extension was used until April 1918, and again in September, and after the Armistice graves were brought in from the neighbouring battlefields. BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY contains 610 Commonwealth burials of the First World War; 17 of the graves were destroyed by shell fire and are represented by special memorials. BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION contains 4,403 Commonwealth burials of the First World War; 11 of the graves made in April 1918 were destroyed by shell fire and are represented by special memorials. There are also 17 Commonwealth burials of the Second World War and 154 German burials from both wars. Both the Commonwealth plot in the communal cemetery and the extension were designed by Sir Herbert Baker.
    4343 identified casualties

John A Howard was a school teacher and apparently doing quite well when war broke out. He went to Europe and was in Gallipoli, from there he went to France and died there of wounds received in battle.
