    Enlisted in the British Army on August 1, 1917 at age 19, posted to the Royal Machine Gun Corp. He was shipped to France in January, 1918. The daily wage for a private was one shilling, seven pence, of which 7 pence was withheld and sent to family. The next to last entry in John?s pay book is dated 3-11-18; he had been captured by the German Imperial Army. His unit was stationed at the juncture of the British and French lines and had been surrounded by the enemy. This action was part of the Second Battle of the Somme, and John was reported as missing in action
    His mother, Margaret Stephen Scott contacted the Queen Victoria Jubilee Fund Enquiry Branch to seek help in learning if he had been captured. Her inquiry was sent to the neutral Swiss Red Cross; they contacted the German Red Cross in Berlin. After a long wait, she was advised that her youngest son Pvt. J. D. Scott, MGC No. 127365 was alive in POW Camp No. 104634 in Friedricksfeld, near Wisel, Germany.
    The prisoners were unaware of the armistice, but the prison guards had disappeared overnight The POW?s marched westward seeking food and friendly forces. They came upon an installation of the Royal Canadian Air Force. A sentry summoned an officer who, appalled by the wretched physical state of the men, said "My God, are you men British?". They quickly provided medical treatment and food (The former prisoners all became ill because their stomachs rejected the food.) John was part of the first group of former POW?s to be repatriated to Great Britain; they were met by huge cheering crowds at the port city of Southampton. The last entry in his pay book was made on 11-17-18, just after the armistice on 1 1-1 1-18.
    John said by the time he was captured, there was little food for the German Army, let alone the prisoners: "the guards ate turnips; the prisoners ate turnip greens. John had many scars on his shoulders and back due to boils caused by malnutrition. He had no appetite for greens ever after..."I've eaten all the greens I care to".

    Peggy was predeceased by her parents, Andrew and Isobel Christie; a sister, Norma Cassey; and, her loving husband, of over 62 years, Thomas E. Costello. She is survived by her children: Denise (Jack) Maher, Thomas S. Costello and Robert D. (Beck) Costello; her grandchildren: Christie Chandler and Muriel Maher; her great grandchildren: Elise and R.J. Chandler. Also surviving is her sister, Eleanor (Ed) Vekony and numerous nieces and nephews.
    Peggy loved to garden, read and travel. She loved the sound of waves crashing on the beach or the sound sitting by a babbling brook. She thought her children and grandchildren were so talented and her great grandchildren were geniuses. She encouraged all of us to be whatever we wanted. Peg was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Haddonfield for many years.
    Relatives and friends are invited to her Visitation, Tuesday from 9 to 10:30 AM, followed by her Memorial Service at 10:30 AM at TERRANOVA FUNERAL HOME, 402 White Horse Pike, Haddon Heights. Entombment will follow at Locustwood Memorial Park.

    Notes:

    An update to the family tree that I should have mentioned before is the death of my first cousin, John Calvin Cassey, Jr. on 2 OCT 1998. He died at age 47 from colon cancer, leaving a wife Jeannie Jinkner Casey and two children, Andrew and Jamie. He retired due to his illness as the vice president of the YMCA of Wilmington, Delaware. He had worked for the Y for 21 years after receiving his BS in Psychology from Grove City college and his Masters from West Chester University. Services and burial were at Red Clay Creek Presbyterian Church where he had been an elder in Wilmington Delaware.
    He was my favorite cousin, as we were the same age and he was always so much fun. Every old photo that I have of when we were kids, I'm right next to him smiling. My aunt and uncle still haven't quite gotten over it. In his last year I sent him the genealogical stuff on our family and he was thrilled with what Moira and I were coming up with. This is before I met you and for some reason just wasn't ready to talk about his death. I drove the 6 hours to Delaware for his funeral and most of the other cousins were there which was nice.
