My father and mother were married at Gilleston (near Mooroopna) where they lived for some time, then moving to Pine Lodge, then Tallygaroopna. In 1912 they moved to Karinga Park, Malong, NSW where they lived till 1942, farming of course. They eventually retired to live at Yenda, where they eventually lived with my husband and I. Mother died in April 1954 (I think) at the age of 84. Dad lived until he was 88. They are both buried in the Griffith cemetery. Their family, Joe is the eldest, he married Jane Marshall and they had 6 children. Flo being the first grandchild and her daughter Heather was the first great grandchild. David Leslie was the second son, he too is buried at Griffith. Claude the third son has disappeared, he was always a rolling stone, we presume he must be dead as we have not heard from him for at least 40 years.
Then myself Lucy Gladys born at Pine Lodge 3 July 1902. Then Frances Rose 2 1/2 years younger than me married Thomas Charles Billingham at Karinga Park in 1922 I think. They had three daughters Thelma Van Nifterick, she was a WRAN in WWII and married a Dutch airman Leon Van Nifterick, they lived first in Djkarta then Holland then Germany and have finally retired to Dinai in Spain. We see then every couple of years. They have three children Nicky, Jacqueline and Kerri all grown up in Germany.
Valmai married Jim (I can't think of his name, I have never met him). They lived in London and have no family. I saw Val a couple of years ago. Carmel born in 1938 married Ron Gossipp, he was a bank teller but is now a director of a big finance company. They lived in New Zealand for a while, I visited them there. Have now returned to NSW and are living at St Ives in Sydney. I visited them on my return trip (my second) from Queensland last November. They had two sons Garry and Paul.
Tom Billington died in 1972 and my sister remarried widower Hector King three years later. They live at Leeton and are very happy.
Alice Sophie (my third sister) born 1910 Victoria married Ted Rennie at Karinga Park, had five children. Ray married three children lives Yenda. Max married with six children. He is a foreman at Yenda Rice Mill. Ray works for Sheppards a big wine carrying firm. Nola married Neville Hallam a ricegrower near Griffith, his only child a daughter Lisa. Carol married Allan Gawthrop a butcher lives at Rankin Park near Newcastle. He has a butcher's shop at Mt Hunter, near Newcastle. They have two boys David and Michael. I visit them every year. Ivor married with two children Brent and Austin now lives at Port Macquarie.
My sister Sophie became ill on Boxing Day nearly six years ago, had cancer of the spine, she was paralyzed from the waist down, she lived until 20 September that year. She was only 64, had remarkable courage. They had 10 grandchildren. (I have 12)
Bertha well you know all about her I presume. Talking of families past times etc my eldest son Ross and Pat his wife both play tennis, Audrey and her husband and daughter all play golf. Audrey is a keen worker for her church, which is mine also, the Uniting Church.
Les and Maureen and their boys play golf. Laurie is a keen golfer has won cups galore and won the Griffith Championship twice. He is secretary for Griffith Golf Club.
My late husband Arthur was a keen Aussie Rules footballer also a very keen tennis player in his youth.
I played bowls for many years. I have been keenly interested in local government and am a life member of the Yenda Progress Assn. I was secretary for 13 years and I have also held offices as secretary and treasurer in both CWA and Red Cross at Yenda. I have long service badges from both these organizations but am just a member and go to meetings occasionally.
Regarding my parents they celebrated their Golden wedding also their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. We had planned a big party for the last named anniversary but mother unfortunately had to have an operation to have an eye removed at this time but she was well enough to have visitors and receive telegrams from the Queen, the Governor General, Sir William Slim, the prime Minister and Premier of New South Wales. She was of gentle nature and loved by all but Pa (as he was universally called) was a different nature. Uncle Joe is a chip off the old block.
