Memories of John Gordon by A J G Homeward (written to Joyce Ethel Gordon):
We knew your grandfather well. My personal memories of him are somewhat interwoven with stories told by my parents and neighbours. He must have been the toughest man I've ever known. He always had to have a stick or crutch to walk with, yet he managed to milk cows and dairy generally. One thing I remember vividly is how he used to grub bushes out -- walking from bush to bush with his crutch, then get down on his knees and dig our or chop off each bush. Can you imagine any of our youngsters of today doing that? He only milked about eight or nine cows (from memory) so he didn't have much cream to send to the factory. Because of this he only sent it once a week so every Sunday he would harness his horse (Paddy) to the slide and bring the can of cream to our dairy and we would take it the rest of the way to the road on Monday. We brought his bread and groceries back to our place and he usually came over for tea on Friday nights and took it home in a chaff bag over his back, also carrying a hurricane lantern if the night was dark, and walking with a crutch!! Quite often after tea "Johnnie" (as we knew him) would produce his concertina and play and sing. Two songs of his which are very strong in my mind wer - Two Little Girls in Blue and If only I could take your Hand. He had a very good baritone voice which must have been really great when he was younger. Mention is made in the Centenary Booklet about him playing the phonograph for dancing but this was before my time. We were all very fond of Johnnie -- he became like one of the family. He always had Christmas dinner with us and joined all our family gatherings. We had an agreement by which he used to light his bedroom light fairly early so we would see it from our milking bails and we'd know he was alright. If he wanted someone he didn't light his lamp one of us would go over to see what was wrong.
