Fagg Family History:
Samuel Hadley and William Fagg were brothers and came from Shoulden, near Deal, on the east coast of Kent, arriving in Geelong in 1852. Thebrotherssoon after arrival started off for the goldfields. On returning, they settled down as builders and timber merchants in Pakington St south,inChilwell, about 50 feet from Russell St. As houses and shops were being built in Chilwell and other centres, the Fagg Bros did good businesshere. They had their homes on the same block. William's was directly opposite to Nicholas St and Samuel and his sister, before they were married, lived onthe extreme south of the block. About 1860 the firm opened business in South Geelong, and it is carried on still today by the Fagg family.Samuel wasone of the early members of the Newtown and Chilwell Fire Brigade. Both brothers gave unostentatiously to many cases of distress andphilanthropicmovements, and were always ready to support anything for the good of the community.
Sarah was born at Stroud in Gloucestershire in 1850. Her parents, Charles, a bootmaker, and her mother Mary, migrated with young Sarah, not yettwoyears old, and with the other children, Polly, Ellen and Gus.
Samuel married Sarah in 1871. She was more than 20 years younger than Samuel.
Article in "The Investigator" Decemeber 1985:
"The family born to Samuel and Sarah were nine in number, five boys and four girls. They remember their mother as plump and cheerful, and morethanone person thought she resembled Queen Victoria. She was about 5ft 5", brown-eyed, and with fair straight hair, she was always an optimist.Shedearly loved all her large family, and in turn, was loved by all who knew her.
The household, which always needed extra help, was extended over the years with Sarah's two sisters. Polly had married a widower, Rev. WilliamWorth,a Methodist minister, and they had an only child, Syd. When her husband died, Polly came to live with the Fagg family, spending there theanxiousyears of WWI, in which Syd was killed in 1917, a dreadful tragedy for all the family, for Syd was a much respected and loved young man.
Sarah's other sister, Ellen, developed epilepsy during adolescence, and it was the special duty of Sophie, the eldest Fagg daughter, to care for her."
There is more information in the article on each of their children.
Samuel and sarah lived in their first years of marriage in McKillop St., near the railway line on the north side. Later they lived in Maude St,westof Moorabool St. - Samuel's address at the time of his death.
There is a large memorial in one of the Methodist sections of the Eastern Cemetery, Geelong. It has four sides, dedicated to Samuel, Sarah, daughtersElsie, Ann, Sophia, Rhoda and sons Charles, George, Thomas, Frank and Henry.
