      "Early History of South Geelong"
"Mr Benjamin G. Warr purchased the property in South Geelong [Foster St] that had belonged to his brother-in-law, William Ham. Mr Warr cametoGeelong with his parents in 1852 from Buckingham. On leaving school he became an apprentice with Mr E. Bartlett, the draper, whose place ofbusinesswas in Moorabool St. When a young man he worked for Messrs Bright & Hitchcocks, and with this old firm he was connected for 26 years, duringwhichtime for may years he was traveller for the firm in the Western District, going as far as Warrnambool in the west and as far north as Skipton.Inthis way he became acquainted with nearly all the squatters, agriculturalists and pastoralists in that part of the colony. For the same firmheestablished a branch at Queenscliff and was manager of it for seven years. Mr Warr has lived a very busy life, and has proved thatindustryovercomes difficulties and improves and fits one for higher employment. He is now living in retirement at Newtown, and in his advancingyears - heis now 84 years of age - believing with Cowper that "absence of occupation is not rest; a mind quite vacant is a mind distressed", he hastaken upseveral hobbies, amongst which are gardening, the keeping of fowls, carpentry, etc. His favourite pastimes are shooting and fishing, andmany happyhours has he spent in the boat when staying with Mr W. R. Anderson Jnr., his son-in-law, at Indented Head. Mr Warr was for many years anactive andearnest worker in the South Geelong Methodist Church and Sunday School."

Benjamin's wrote his reminiscences in an exercise book and they give a fascinating glimpse into life in early Geelong.
