Notes - William Davidson, who was born on July 22, 1883 in Catterline, Aberdeenshire to James & Elizabeth (Stephen) Davidson, enlisted as an Able Seaman (Service # Clyde Z/1740) with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve: Benbow Battalion R.N. Div. on October 24, 1914. An Insurance Agent, by trade, William was living at 29 New Street in Stonehaven when he enlisted. On June 3, 1915, Able Seaman Davidson was killed in action near Dardanelles, Turkey and was buried 200 yards west of 3rd pillar East Krithia Road, by a Chaplain Bevill Close. His body would later be moved to the Skew Bridge Cemetery in Canakkale, Turkey. He was 31 years old.
William was survived by his widowed mother, who was living at 14 Catterline, as well as by his wife, Ida Mary Davidson and their son, William Davidson, who were both living at 37 High Street in Stonehaven when they learned of his death. Unfortunately, William Jr. would also be killed 27 years later on October 29, 1942, while serving with the Canadian Merchant Navy on board the "SS Bic Island", which was torpedoed and sunk by U-224 southwest of Rockall Islet in the North Atlantic Ocean.
Able Seaman Davidson's name is inscribed on the Skew Bridge Cemetery - Special Memorial - A. 30 in Canakkale, Turkey, as well as on the family headstone at the Dunnottar Kirkyard in Stonehaven and the Stonehaven & District War Memorial.
