    • John was a returned soldier from World War I. He was a teacher at Monument Creek when he enlisted on 19th August 1914. He served in the MiddleEastand at Gallipoli, and then in France and Flanders. He disembarked back in Australia on 29th January 1919 as a Second Lieutenant. He was awardedaMilitary Cross for "conspicuous gallantry and devotion during attack." He was decorated by the King at Buckingham Palace on April 13, 1918.
