    • Walter family history:
      Nathan Walter and his great friend, David Ham, together with Nathan's brother-in-law Benjamin Allin, were on the goldfields in 1852, nodoubtinfluenced by "gold fever" and the opportunity provided by transport from Geelong to the Ballarat fields.
      In July 1852, David Ham was one of the first to open up Little Bendigo with one of his mates, Nathan Walter. Ham and Walter sank the first holeinCanadian Gully and here a rare prize was obtained in the shape of a 30 ounce nugget. which was retained by David Ham for work and labour done.Thenugget and other gold obatined by them was found in shallow diggings. It is reported that Nathan was still in the "golden city" during thestirringtimes of the Eureka Riots.
