    • Joseph is mentioned in his father John's will of 5 May 1762:
      I give and bequeath unto my son Joseph Pethick of Week St Mary, carpenter, the sum of Twenty Pounds lawfull money to be paid at the end of oneyearafter my Death. And I likewise give unto my said son Joseph all my Carpenters working tools of all kinds (except my Pump Tools) and my PumpTools ofall kinds I give joyntely between my two sons Humphry & Joseph and neither of them to sell nor diminish any of the said Pump Tools buteither tohave the use of the said Tools when he has any Pump Work to do and if either of them break or hurt any of the said Tools he shall reparethe sameagain at his own expence. And I likewise give unto my Joseph the Chest standing by the position in the Chamber the left hand from the Starehead.

      Memorandum of Agreement, 20 April 1762.
      Between the major part of the Eight Men of the parish of Stratton and William Colmer of Poughill, for a lease determinable of three lives tobechosen and named by the lessee of and in "our part of HEAL MILLS", together with the wastes and plots adjoining, and woodland and housesthereuntobelonging, for a term of 99 years, if the lives shall so long endure, paying for consideration one guinea.
      Counterpart, 31 October 1763.
      Hugh Payne, Edward Hallett, and others, feoffees [those to whom land is given in the feudal system], for and in consideration of the re-erectionorre-building of the mills and mill-houses, commonly called HELE MILLS, together with the dwelling house and outhouses thereunto belonging, whicharenow ruinous and decayed, as well as for £2.2s. demise and grant to JOSEPH PETHEICK and his assigns all that their part, parcel and portion, thatisto say, one third part, of those mills, mill-houses, dwelling house and outhouses called HELE MILLS, and watercourse to the said millsbelonging,also the commons without the said mills and plot of wood or woodland ground thereto adjoining, all which premises were sometime in thetenure ofBenjamin Gayer, and now of JOSEPH PETHEICK, of Week St Mary, millwright; for 99 years, if JOHN PETHEICK, son of the said Joseph, aged 4years orthereabouts, JOSEPH another son of the same, aged 15 weeks or thereabouts, and ELIZABETH, daughter of the said Joseph, aged about 2 years,or any ofthem, shall so long happen to live. Yearly rent 10s. 4d.; also a heriot or farleu after the death of each tenant.

      Hele Mills - The Hamlet there is situated on both sides of the River Strat/Neth, partly in Stratton and partly in Marhamchurch at the bottom ofadeep combe. It is also the end of the Bude portion of the Bude Canal into which water is still fed from the river. From the hamlet the Canalusedto go up an inclined plane to just outside the churchtown of Marhamchurch, the barges being winched up it and the horses led up beside it.Further,there is a substantial farm named Hele above the combe on the Stratton side.

      Joseph's will was dated 2 May 1781. He was buried on 9 May 1781.
      "I give and bequeath unto my well-beloved son John my Mills, known by the name of Hele Mills with the Estate belonging to the same, as also allmyGoods both quick and dead, as also my working tools and other Implements to me belonging, Household Furniture, within or without.
      I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son Joseph the sum of Ten Pounds to be paid after the expiration of five years from the Date hereof, andnotsooner.
      I give and bequeath unto my well beloved daughter Elizabeth the sum of Ten Pounds to be paid to her at the expiration of five years from theDatehereof and not sooner.
      I give and bequeath unto my well beloved daughter Mary, the sum of Twenty Pounds when (if it please God) she cometh to the age of Twenty one years.
      I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son Thomas the sum of Twenty Pounds when (if it please God) he cometh to the age of Twenty one years.
      I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son Stephen the sum of Twenty Pounds when (if it please God) he cometh to the age of Twenty one years.
      I give and bequeath unto my well beloved son Richard the sum of Twenty Pounds when (if it please God) he cometh to the age of Twenty one years.
      I give and bequeath unto Mary Bray Widow of Charles Bray of Marham Church, the Sum of Ten Pounds one half to be paid after my decease, and theotherhalf to be paid at the expiration of one full year after the first payment.
      It is also my Will that if any of my Children named above should by the Will of the Almighty be called out of this Life before their Legaciesgivenby me is due unto them, the said legacies belonging to them shall be equally and evenly divided among the surviving, and to be paid and payableonlyas exprest above.
      It is also my Will that if it please God to call my Son John out of this transitory Life before he is possessed of Male Issue, that theMills,Estate, Goods, Chattels, etc, as above ... shall be to the discretion of my well beloved sister Elizabeth Levick of the Parish of Week StMary, togive unto either of my Sons then surviving and not to go out, or depart from the Family as long as one of my Sons, or their Sons is living.
      Thereby make and appoint my dearly beloved son John, full and sole Executor.
