Notes - 1 Just a memory from my childhood - As the above Andrew Stephen who died in New York had married but had no children Elma Henderson was his sole beneficiary. I can remember my Mum telling me that every time Elma had a boyfriend that her Mum (Annie Stephen) tried to put a stop to any relationship as she thought they would be ' after ' Elma's money - assuming, of course, that Elma was to tell every would be boy-friend she was heiress to quite a bit of money !! It must have worked - Elma remained un-married ! (Enid Gove)
2 There seems to be little information about George Stephen. He was, according to his nephew, my dad, quite a prosperous fisherman. He had several boats. His son Andrew told my dad his father left 30,000 pound sterling on his death, quite a bit of money at the time. I don?t believe George came to the US nor did his daughter Ann to my knowledge, nor do I now if Ann ever married.
George's son Andrew was about the same age as my father, a year or two younger, I think, so I would use c 1900. When WW1 broke out, Andrew joined the Gordon Highlanders without telling anyone as he had to lie about his age. He saw action in France (and earned a medal or two, they say). His father contacted the military police and had him sent home? he was only 16 or 17 but a very handsome, tall strapping fellow. He reenlisted just as soon as he was old enough.
I don?t know when Andrew came to the U.S. but when WW11 broke out he enlisted in the US Army on or about 1-8-42 and was assigned stateside as Regiment 69 supply officer. By the this time Andrew had married a lovely girl called Nell, in Brooklyn, I believe. I don?t know her maiden name, but I do know she was of the Catholic faith and Irish extraction. According to my mother, they were very much in love and very happy. Sadly, they had no children?I don?t know why.
One day, Andrew came home from work and found his beloved Nell at the foot of the stairs, tangled up in the cord from the vacuum cleaner which was still running. She had broken her neck. He never did remarry although in his late 40?s when he was widowed.
Andrew would visit Amsterdam every few years to see his many relatives there and he liked to go to the racetrack in nearby Saratoga. We also know that he used to go back to Scotland every few years to visit family there, especially his sister Ann. Poor Andrew had a dreadful accident in 1969 in Florida: his car went off a bridge into the water and he very nearly drowned. He never really recuperated from his experience and his last few years were plagued by poor health. In 1974 Andrew wrote my dad and began to send along photographs and newspaper clippings re Catterline? a lot of items to do with the Stephen family. He died shortly after, but I don?t know the date.
Andrew was 6'2", handsomest one in the family, had a wonderful sense of humour always well-dressed and gentlemanly.
