Notes - There is no record of his birth in the Parish Registers of Brechin In the 1841 Census William is listed as being four years old. In the 1851 Census, William was 13 and living at home in Upper Tenements, Brechin (see Map) and was listed as a Grocer's apprentice. In the 1861 Census, aged 23, he is still living at home at 147 Montrose Street, Brechin. He is unmarried and listed as a mason. He was 26 on his marriage to Elizabeth Mitchell in 1863, and was a Master, General Merchant. His residence is given as Laurencekirk. His brother George was a witness as was a Mary Mitchell, presumably Elizabeth's sister. His father-in-law was dead at that date. William's wife died in 1869 after the birth of daughter Elizabeth. His occupation is given as a Master Baker. In the 1871 Census, William was living at 95 High Street, Laurencekirk, as were his parents. His eldest son, William, was five and daughter, Elizabeth, was one year old. He is listed as a Master Grocer employing 3 men and 1 boy. Cannot find Alexander (aged 3) in this Census. Still living at 95 High Street in the 1881 Census - Listed as a Councillor, Grocer & Baker, now employing 4 men & 2 boys. Both his parents are with him, but only William (junior) aged 15 is at home - both Alexander and Elizabeth were staying with their uncle Alexander at Brechin. At the 1891 census, William was still living at 95 High Street, Laurencekirk - both his parents were also still at this address. His son William, aged 25, son Alexander, 23, and his daughter Elizabeth, aged 21 (his housekeeper) were all at home. By the 1901 Census, William was 63 and was living at the Mill of Thornton Farm House and listed as a Farmer. His sister, Christine was living with him as his housekeeper. He also had a granddaughter with him - a Lizzie G Austin. aged 2. William died in 1923 of senile decay - listed as a retired farmer. He died at The Firs, Garvock Street, Laurencekirk, which was, apparently, his son Alexander's house.
