Notes - There is no record of his birth in the Parish Registers of Brechin In the 1841 Census, James is listed as being 12 years old and an apprentice in the Linen trade. In the 1851 Census James is 22, unmarried and still living at home. He is listed as a Slater Journeyman In the 1861 Census James is 32, still unmarried and living at home, and listed as a Slater. James was married in 1865, aged 35. In the 1871 Census James is living at 13 Union Street, Brechin with his wife and two children as well as his father-in-law, William. He is listed as a Slater, employing 5 men and 2 boys. On his brother, David's, death certificate in April 1871, he is recorded as living at 17 Union Street, Brechin. In the 1881 Census, James was away at Inch Grundle. Lochlee, Forfar - presumably on a job - he is still a Slater. His wife and (now) three children were living at 48 Market Street, Brechin. James died in1886 of a stroke, there was presumably a post mortem, judging by the notes in the margin of the Death Record. The Registrar was notified by his brother, Alexander still living at Southesk Street. In the 1891 Census his wife and both sons were still living at Market Street. Both are listed as slaters.
