Notes - There is no record of his birth in the Parish Registers of Brechin In the 1841 Census Alexander is listed as being 10 years old By the 1851 Census Alexander is 19 years old, living at home and working as a Wright Journeyman (Possibly a Wheelwright - 1861 Census) In the 1861 Census he is 29, still living at home, but now listed as a Joiner. Alexander was married to Mary Ferguson in 1863 - she came from Edzell Village. Witnesses were brothers James and William. He is listed as a Factory Overseer. In the 1871 Census he is 39, married to Mary and living at 17 Southesk Street, and working as a Powerloom Factory Worker. He has three children at this date - David F, Mary Ann and Jessie. In the 1881 Census he is listed, aged 49, as living at 23 Southesk Street, Brechin. He is widowed, but has his sister Christina, aged 47, living with him as housekeeper, as well as his sister Mary Ann, aged 32. With him also are son David F, and daughters Mary Ann, 15, Jessie,11 and Helen, 9 as well as nephew Alexander M, 13 and Elizabeth M, 11. In 1886 Alexander was still living in Southesk Street - he was the informant when his brother, James, died. By the 1891 Census he still had his sister Christina living with him as his housekeeper. He was again listed as a Factory Overseer. His daughters were still at home, too - Mary Ann was a dressmaker, as was Helen. Jessie was a teacher at a Board School. In the 1901 Census, he was 69 and still living at 23 Southesk St, with Jessie and Helen, neither of whom were married. His occupation is given as a Bookkeeper in a Linen Factory. Jessie is still a Board School Teacher, Helen has no occupation - perhaps she is acting as housekeeper. Alexander died, aged 73, in 1905 - he was then living at the Mill of Thornton, Marykirk. His daughter, Mary Ann registered the death. Her name is given as Mary Ann Cordiner but, so far, there is no trace of a marriage - she still appears to live in the family home at Southesk Street though. Neither can I trace a death certificate in this name.
