    Robert Wilson was a stonemason, and worked on Mellerstain under Robert Adam Robert and Elizabeth Yellowlees are buried in the graveyard at St Nicholas Old Kirk, Dalkeith, also many of their children. He had a tenancy in a house called Firbrae. A modern house sits on the same site at Mellerstain.

    Robert married Elizabeth YELLOWLEES in 1770.     About this time a family of the name of Yellowlees, evidently of the Mellerstain stock, lived at Cowdenknowes, near Earlston. A daughter of this household, Elizabeth Yellowlees, was married to Robert Wilson, who was descended from a major of the foot, who had settled at Smailholm in the reign of Queen Anne. She (Elizabeth Yellowlees), was grandmother of Samuel Smiles, the eminent author of several standard works.
