    Notes:

    OCCUPATION: Policeman, NSW Police Force. Joined NSW police as a probationary foot constable on 13th April, 1892. Appointed ordinary constable 13th April 1893; died in force 15th November 1895 (record states no details available). Stationed in the southern police district throughout his police career. (head station Goulburn NSW). Records do not reveal at which stations in the district John Howard was stationed.

    John Howard was a policeman in the NSW Police Force. He was at Goulburn and then was transferred to Braidwood. I believe he had the rank of Constable but could have been a Sergeant. He was in charge of Braidwood station and alone in his service in that community. I remember my mother telling of his death in this way; apparently there was trouble with the local publican of the time, he wished to trade after hours. Previous policeman had, it seemed for certain favours, permitted this and turned a blind eye to it. John Howard it seems would not allow it and refused bribery. The publican became incensed by this and in some way compromised John Howard with a young girl 16 years old. Accusations were made and a police enquiry followed at which John Howard was found guilty. He returned from the trial and took his service pistol to the back of the Police Station yard where there were some bushes or brush and shot himself dead. This has not been substantiated but feel it is possible it could be as it would be on record with the Police Force.
