    Other Events and Attributes:

    • Occupation: Ship Carpenter

    Notes:

John Stewart Stephen, was the son of William Stephen and Margaret Walker. He was born in Kinneff parish about 1848. On the 20 October 1876 he married Mary McLeod at Cotbank of Hilton just up the road from Catterline. This was a double ceremony as Mary's older sister Margaret married John Lewis, the local coastguard.
John Stephen was a carpenter in Scotland, but he must have travelled to New Zealand sometime between October 1876 and November 1877 when his wife Mary set sail with her parents, three brothers and 2 sons; William and John.
William was illegitimate and was brought up by his McLeod grandparents.
The McLeod family left Greenock Scotland on the 22 November 1877 and anchored off Manaford Bay on the 6 February 1878.
John Stephen worked at the Turbine Mine at Ross, maybe as a carpenter and was Grand Master of the Manchester Unity Oddfellows Loyal Ross Lodge. This is according to a framed illuminated address in the possession of Janice Good a Gt Grand-daughter of John & Mary Stephen. It appears that John & Mary left Ross in early April 1884 and went to live at Tuapeka Flat with her parents until moving to Blue Spur above Gabriels Gully in March 1885. The next reference to John is his death certificate dated 24 December 1886 at Blue Spur signed by Dr G Blair. Cause of death - Cramp of Bowels - 10 hours. This would tie in with family lore that he died from drinking water that was contaminated with mercury from a gold mine.
He was only aged 37 years and had been in New Zealand 10 years.
He is buried in Plot 149, Block 1 Anglican section of Lawrence cemetery. Also in the Plot are his infant daughter Margaret, 12 year old Hellen Stewart (Mary's daughter by her second husband John Stewart) and an infant grandson of the Stewarts who was drowned in the Tuapeka River.
After the death of John, Mary moved back to her parents at Tuapeka Flat. On 2 December 1889 she married John Stewart at Tuapeka West with David Stephen, John's brother ? as a witness. John & Mary Stewart had a further 5 children.
John Stephen is buried at Lawrence Cemetery. Block 1 Plot 149. In the same grave is Margaret Stevens (sic) JOhn Stuart Stephen, Ellen McMurkie Stewart and John Anderson (infant) 4 May 1916.

John married Mary McLeod on 20 Oct 1876 in Cotbank of Hilton Farm, Catterline, Kincardineshire, Scotland. Mary (daughter of Alexander McLeod and Margaret Burnett) was born on 7 Dec 1851 in Maryculter, Kincardineshire, Scotland; died on 30 Apr 1922 in Tuapeka West, Clutha, Otago, New Zealand; was buried in Lawrence Cemetery, Lawrence, Otago, New Zealand.
