283 1861 Census indicates James mother 'Barbara Elizabeth Foord' was a 'widow', thus indicating James father, James died between 1857 and 1861.

1871 Census has no record of Barbara Foord/chapman or James; BUT Barbara Foord had married Charles Brodrick in 1862 - by 1871 Censes Barbara Brodrick had 3 children BUT James (then 14) was not living with her ... NOR was James recorded anywhere in the 1871 Census. so what happened ?

a) Did James get placed elsewhere with family, workhouse etc after Barbara's marriage to Brodrick ? Presumably not as he's not on the 1871 Census

b) What happened to James and how did he get to the Cape Province South Africa by 1876/77 ie the birth of his and Louisa's first child ?
